Topic:  The Creative Economy

Background:  Change is something we may try to stop but never will.  From the agriculture economy to the manufacturing economy to the knowledge/information economy to that of the creative economy … where wealth creation is dependent upon the capacity of a nation to continually create ideas.  In short, a nation without a vibrant creative labor force does not possess the knowledge base to succeed in the creative economy, and must depend on ideas produced elsewhere.

The creative economy is a new a world in which people work with their brains instead of their hands.   A world in which innovation is more important than mass production.  A world in which investment buys new concepts or the means to create them, rather than new machines.

In this new world … ideas are the new global currency ...

Presentation: An Introduction to the Killer Innovation Approach

Phil McKinney

Below are the slides from a presentation I gave last week introducing IT executives to the Killer Innovation Approach.  In addition to the slides, I ran the attendee's through a "sample" workshop over dinner where they were provided a task/objective, they had to meet an idea quota, rank their ideas and then present their best idea by the time dessert came around. It generated some great conversations over dinner.

I plan on recording audio to accompany the slides so keep an eye on upcoming podcasts.

Update:  Below are the links to the audio that has been recorded so far .....

Sample of a Gate/Milestone Map

Below is a sample of a gate/milestone map.  When creating your own map, keep in mind:

  • Define the "swim lanes" for each function within your organization
  • The gates need to be clear go/no go decision points
  • Each tag on the swim lane is a clear deliverable
  • You may want to color code the tags (green=on track, yellow=concern, red=late)
  • The objective is to give management a one page update on a given program
